How I Can Support You
-
II provide expert consulting services at the intersection of molecular diagnostics and oncology. I offer tailored services to clinicians, researchers and industry partners seeking to integrate advanced molecular pathology into their practice.
My core areas of expertise include:
- Molecular diagnostics in oncology: interpretation of genetic and biomarker testing results for precision therapy.
- Pathology consulting: support with complex diagnostic cases, second opinions, and biomarker-driven treatment decisions.
- Research collaboration: guidance on study design, biomarker validation and molecular analyses in translational and clinical research.
- Laboratory setup and workflows: strategic advice on implementing molecular and immunohistochemical diagnostics.
-
I provide expert education and training in histopathology, molecular pathology, immunohistochemistry and personalised medicine, in the form of lectures, workshops and mentoring.
-
Clear communication is essential in medicine and science. My specialism is transforming complex data into precise, accessible texts that meet the highest professional standards.
-
My name is Professor Leonhard Müllauer, Associate Professor of Pathology at the Medical University of Vienna. I have over 30 years' experience in clinical and molecular pathology. As Head of the Molecular Pathology and Immunohistochemistry Laboratories at the Institute of Pathology, I have led diagnostic and research programmes at the intersection of pathology, cell biology, genetics, and oncology.
I am an expert in a wide range of diagnostic techniques, including histopathology, molecular pathology and immunohistochemistry. I have contributed to national and international expert committees and served on the editorial boards of leading oncology journals. I have also supported research funding agencies across Europe by reviewing grants. I have also performed my own and collaborative research projects, the results of which are documented in over 200 research articles cited on PubMed.
Through my consultancy, I provide bespoke molecular pathology expertise to support accurate diagnostics, biomarker development, and personalised treatment strategies in oncology. My goal is to bridge the gap between academic excellence and clinical application, helping partners in medicine, research, and industry to implement cutting-edge molecular pathology in practice.
-
I studied medicine at the University of Vienna, receiving my MD in 1987. Driven by a strong interest in molecular cancer research, I pursued further academic study at Hokkaido University in Japan, completing a PhD in Cancer Research and Molecular Genetics in 1993.
Following postdoctoral research at the University of Vienna's Institute of Tumor Biology, I joined the Medical University of Vienna's Institute of Pathology in 1994.
In 2001, I earned my habilitation in pathology at the University of Vienna, which laid the foundation for my career as a physician-scientist at the intersection of clinical diagnostics and molecular oncology.
-
After completing my PhD in Japan, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Cancer Research at the University of Vienna.
Since 1994, I have been based at the Institute of Pathology at the Medical University of Vienna, where I was appointed Associate Professor in 2001.
Over the years, I have directed several key laboratories, including Genetics, Haematopathology, and Biobanking. I currently direct the Laboratories for Molecular Pathology and Immunohistochemistry.
I also coordinate the Platform for Molecular Diagnostics and Treatment in Oncology at Vienna General Hospital. In addition to these roles, I contribute to the Vienna Cancer Centre as Programme Director for Pathology. I am also actively involved in national and international expert committees in cancer research, molecular diagnostics, and oncology.
-
I am the author or co-author of over 200 peer-reviewed articles published in international journals and indexed by PubMed.
-
Teaching has always been an integral part of my career.
During my time at the Medical University of Vienna, I have played an active role in educating medical students and training residents in molecular pathology, genetics and oncology, as well as mentoring young scientists.
Through lectures, seminars and laboratory supervision, I seek to bridge the gap between research and clinical application, equipping the next generation of pathologists and medical scientists with the necessary skills to tackle the challenges posed by precision medicine.
